MMRI Names Recipients of Prestigious Halfond-Weil Postdoctoral and Research Fellowships
UTICA, N.Y. – The Masonic Medical Research Institute (MMRI) is proud to announce that Vikas Sharma, Ph.D., of the McCarthy laboratory, and Bing Xu, Ph.D., of the Kontaridis laboratory, have been named recipients of the 2026 Halfond-Weil Postdoctoral and Research Fellowships, respectively. These highly competitive awards support exceptional research scientists working to advance innovative biomedical and translational research.
“This fellowship supports the next generation of scientists who are driving innovation in biomedical research,” said Maria I. Kontaridis, Ph.D., executive director, Gordon K. Moe Professor and chair of biomedical research and translational medicine at MMRI. “By investing in talented researchers like Drs. Sharma and Xu, we are strengthening our ability to translate scientific discoveries into meaningful advances in human health.”
Dr. Sharma’s research focuses on the generation of nanomaterials for targeted drug delivery, an approach with broad potential to improve therapeutic precision across a range of diseases. Dr. Xu’s work investigates the role of RhoA in the molecular pathogenesis of heart disease, contributing to a deeper understanding of cardiovascular disease mechanisms.
“I am deeply honored to receive the Halfond-Weil Postdoctoral Research Fellowship,” said Sharma. “My research in nanomedicine and drug delivery is driven by a passion for advancing science that can impact a wide range of diseases, directly supporting MMRI’s mission. I am sincerely grateful to my mentor, Professor Jason McCarthy, and my lab members for their invaluable support, as well as to Maria Kontaridis, Ph.D., and the generous donors who make this fellowship possible.”
“To receive the Halfond-Weil Research Fellowship is a privilege,” said Xu. “This recognition highlights the importance of continued investigation into pathways like RhoA and their role in disease, and I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to this work at MMRI.”
MMRI extends its gratitude to The Metropolitan Masonic District of Manhattan for its support of the Halfond-Weil Postdoctoral and Research Fellowships.
